26 Oct 2021 The State of the Climate in Asia 2020 report is the first of its kind and a multi-agency effort to provide science-based knowledge on the state of the climate in Asia and its inter-connection with sustainable development in the region. It is a collaborative product of the WMO, United Nations agencies - including the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UNSCWA) - climate, socioeconomic and policy experts in Asia, and experts from international, scientific and technical institutions. It provides a snapshot of climate trends, extreme weather, and associated risks and impacts in key sensitive sectors. The report highlights lessons for climate action in Asia and identifies pathways for addressing critical gaps and challenges. The report was launched at a high-level event on 26 October 2021, which brought together international and regional scientific organizations and operational offices, policy- and decision-makers, development partners, National Meteorological and Hydrological Services, and climate negotiators. The launch event was chaired by the President of WMO Regional Association II (Asia) Dr Abdulla Al Mandous and featured remarks from WMO Secretary-General Prof. Petteri Taalas, UNESCAP Executive Secretary Armida Alisjahbanah and UNESCWA Executive Secretary Rola Dashti. The event also included a high-level panel discussion featuring perspectives from WMO's Members and partners. Together, stakeholders highlighted the need for urgent climate action in Asia and recognized the importance of coordinating and implementing weather, water and climate-related strategic frameworks in Asia. It was further noted that work was needed to ensure the effective and coherent development and delivery of adequate, science-based and sector-specific weather, water, and climate services for socio-economic development.
