18 Dec 2025 Accelerating Ocean Science Solutions for Sustainable Development documents a pivotal moment for ocean governance in the Western Pacific, one of the world’s most biodiverse and economically dynamic ocean regions, now under mounting pressure from climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss, and unsustainable use.The publication captures the outcomes of two landmark convenings held jointly in Bangkok, Thailand, from 22–25 April 2024: the 2nd UN Ocean Decade Regional Conference for the Western Pacific and the 11th WESTPAC International Marine Science Conference. Together, these events brought governments, scientists, UN agencies, regional bodies, civil society, the private sector, and philanthropic partners into a shared space to assess progress under the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030) and to accelerate science-based solutions aligned with the 2030 Agenda. This report synthesizes the conferences’ key discussions, conclusions, and recommendations. It highlights priorities across ocean-based climate solutions, marine biodiversity research and conservation, and oceans and public health. It also discusses emerging scientific frontiers such as eDNA and remote sensing, as well as the growing role of early-career ocean professionals. Ultimately, the report outlines how IOC/WESTPAC, is strengthening regional cooperation, incubating new Ocean Decade Actions, and reinforcing the science-policy-society interface.
